What does the word "Khata" mean? A "khata" or "Kathak" is a traditional white scarf often made of silk. It symbolizes goodwill, auspiciousness and compassion. It is often given as a gift at special Mongolian and Tibetan ceremonies. The "khata" is a highly versatile gift and can be presented at any festive occasions including weddings, funerals, births, graduations, arrivals and departure of guests etc. The color of the "Khata" is usually always white as this symbolises the pure heart of the giver.
